Horizons
Since 2000, Horizons Greater Washington has provided an award-winning academic and enrichment program for students residing in underserved communities in Washington, DC and Maryland. Its tuition-free summer program and Saturday Academy address the opportunity gap that exists between underserved students and their wealthier peers.
High-quality instruction, hands-on experiential learning, and individualized support from skilled professional teachers are the pillars of Horizons’ model.
When a student enrolls in Horizons Greater Washington, they join a learning community that extends year-round, with a signature five-week summer program, through 8th grade. Horizons Greater Washington students, all of whom are free-or-reduced-lunch qualified, come from over 70 local schools in underserved communities in Washington, DC and Maryland.
To advance educational equity, Horizons removes barriers that stand in the way of participation. Horizons provides a high-quality and accessible program experience through round-trip transportation, meals (breakfast, lunch, and snacks), and all teaching and learning supplies students need to fully participate.
Returning year-after-year, Horizons scholars, staff, and families develop deep, trusting relationships.
Norwood and Horizons Greater Washington
Norwood is one of three schools in the Washington, D.C. area, along with Maret School and St. Patrick’s Episcopal Day School, to work with Horizons Greater Washington, a regional collaboration of Horizons programs at local independent and public schools. Norwood was partnered with Rock Creek Forest Elementary School in Montgomery County and launched its program in the summer of 2010 with a group of rising first graders. Today, the Horizons program at Norwood is fully enrolled, serving approximately 135 students in grades 1-8. The program also provides wonderful opportunities for Norwood community members to serve as teachers, Program Support Staff (PSSs), and volunteers.

Located in Bethesda, MD, Norwood School develops students in grades PK-8 into confident lifelong learners who have the academic, character, and leadership skills to succeed in high school and beyond. Recognizing that children are multi-faceted, Norwood provides many opportunities for safe risk-taking, exploration, discovery, and growth in a nurturing, supportive, and inclusive school community.
