Drama

The arts are an integral part of Norwood School

The arts are an integral part of the daily life at Norwood School, fostering a culture of creativity and collaboration that nurtures all of our students. Through drama, students build even stronger self- confidence, develop solid public-speaking skills, hone interpersonal skills, all while enjoying the fun that is brought forth through dramatic exploration. All children are innate users of drama. Play helps us make sense of the world. It helps us observe and respond to our environment. As we imitate words and actions, we learn, we grow, we explore. Drama makes for smarter, braver human beings by connecting the head to the heart.

Middle School Drama

Middle School (Grades 5-8)
Norwood offers three academic drama classes to middle school students each year: Improvisation, Scenes on Stage, and Filmmaking. In addition, students enjoy an exciting variety of performance opportunities during their middle school years. Fifth graders perform in a play each spring. Sixth graders participate in an annual showcase, which includes dramatic and musical performances. Seventh and eighth graders may participate as cast or crew in a play in November and a musical in May. In the past, students have performed in productions of Guys and Dolls, Seussical, The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood, The Wizard of Oz, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, The Phantom Tollbooth, Mary Poppins, Peter Pan & Wendy, The Little Mermaid, and Once Upon a Pine: Adventures of Pinocchio.

Lower School

Lower School (Grades PK-4)
Students in grades PK-4 have many opportunities throughout the lower school experience to develop, practice, and enjoy public-speaking and performance experiences. While our youngest students do not participate in a separate drama class, they hone these skills in a wide variety of subjects and activities, including music, reading, social studies, Spanish, and morning chapel. Every lower school class participates in a spring stage performance, which features singing, dancing, and storytelling.
